Here at Charter Equine & Small Animal Hospital, we are proud to offer sedation and tranquilization for our patients.
Due to the size and sheer power of a horse, we often have to use sedation and tranquilization for our patients. It makes it easier to restrain them during difficult procedures including dentals, mass removals, and other surgical procedures where we want the horse to remain standing. We can also use sedation and tranquilization for anxious horses to ensure a thorough examination.
There are also times when sedation and tranquilization is used for pain relief, especially with abdominal discomfort and colic. Since pain relief does not usually last long, some of these can be given long-term to help with pain.
Sedatives and tranquilizers are not within risks so it is important to ask any questions before we sedate your horse. As veterinary professionals, we are equipped to deal with any side effects so you shouldn’t be giving them yourself. A few of the sedatives that we use also have reversal agents which wake your horse up.
